Sharing videos with permalink

Channel Managers can share videos with permalink.   The following workflows are supported:

  • Sharing videos with permalink
  • Swap video content under a permalink
  • Create and distribute permalink without content (if they need it for e.g. a marketing campaign where they want to distribute links in advance)

Share your videos with permalink

  1. Find the video you want to share then open the video’s Edit page and navigate to Sharing

Tip: you can directly navigate to video’s sharing page by selecting Share from the video’s context menu on Video manager page and then you will be navigated directly to the Sharing tab page.

  2. On Sharing tab page, within ‘Link to share’ section click Create link

  3. There is already a permalink generated and provided by the system, but you can change it to a human readable name if you like (so when people read the link when it is shared with them they might already be aware what this video is about).

If you edit the link, you need to consider the following constraints:

    •  only letters
    •  numbers
    •  dash (-)
    •  underscore (_)
    •  max 32 characters

However, permalink needs to be unique within a channel. If you enter a url that already exists within the channel, there is a warning message that tells you that this link already exists (and has a video assigned to it) and if you continue it will mean that the link is going to point to this video from now on.

  4. Click ‘Save & copy’ in order to get your permalink saved, and also copied at the same time, so you only need to paste it to where you want to share it.

When sharing the link with others make sure your video is published, so viewers will see that when clicking on the permalink.
  5. Permalink is visible in ‘Link to share’ section, you can copy or edit the link if you like.

How to swap content under a permalink?

pl07.png

The prerequisite of this workflow is to have both videos in place in the platform: the one you want to replace (“old video”) and the one you want to replace the old video with (“new video”). If you don’t have the new video in place yet upload it first.

  1. First, find the video you want to replace with a new content. Open the video’s Edit page and navigate to Sharing tab page.

Tip: you can directly navigate to video’s sharing page by selecting Share from the video’s context menu on Video manager page and then you will be navigated directly to the Sharing tab page.

On Sharing tab page, within ‘Link to share’ section click Copy link.

  2. Now find the video you want to replace the old video with (this is the new content). Open this video’s Edit page and navigate to Sharing tab page.

Tip: you can directly navigate to video’s sharing page by selecting Share from the video’s context menu on Video manager page and then you will be navigated directly to the Sharing tab page.

    • On Sharing tab page, within ‘Link to share’ section click Paste link.
    • You will see a warning message that tells you that this link will be re-assigned if you proceed. This is a confirmation only in this workflow because this is exactly the goal here.

  3. From now on the new video will be available on the permalink (old video has lost the permalink).

Manage permalinks and / or create permalink without associated content

Managing permalinks

Navigate to Channel / Access Control / Permalinks for videos page and click on Manage links:

If you don’t have any permalinks added to the channel yet you get the following page:

Creating new permalink

pl11.png

There is an automatically generated character chain that is by default the url of the permalink. But you can change it if the title matters in your workflow – because you might want to distribute it with an expressive title.

 pl12.png

When entering the title, you need to consider the following constraints:

  • only letters
  • numbers
  • dash (-)
  • underscore (_)
  • max 32 characters

Please note, that you cannot assign video to a permalink here, you can only do that in the video’s page.

Searching for permalinks

You can also search for video permalinks in this page. Search works as follows:

  • it searches either in permalink title or the assigned video title (if exists)
  • between the words in the search field there is an AND relationship
    • if the character chain is included in either the video title or the permalink title, then it will return the permalink record.

Editing existing permalink

If you have permalinks already in the system, you will see the list of the permalinks here (in alphabetical order) and whether or not they are associated to any video yet. If there is a video, you can see video title next to the permalink.

You have the following options:

  • Edit link

When editing a permalink, you can amend its URL or delete the link. When amending the title, you need to consider the following constraints:

  • only letters
  • numbers
  • dash (-)
  • underscore (_)
  • max 32 characters

Creating and sharing permalink without content

pl16.png

  1. Create new permalink in Video permalinks page and copy the permalink (if you want to share).

Please note, if you are using Video Streaming (and not Enterprise Video Streaming) then the Manage Permalinks page is available from under Channel / Sharing menu.

Tip: it is recommended to use human readable url for your permalink especially in this case as you are going to share it in advance, without content associated to it.
  2. When the content gets into the platform (either from a recorded live broadcast or by video upload) open Video permalinks page and search for the previously added permalink.
    • click ‘Copy link’ (please note this option is only visible if you hover over the row of the permalink)
  3. Open the video’s Edit page and navigate to Sharing tab page.

Tip: you can directly navigate to video’s sharing page by selecting Share from the video’s context menu on Video manager page and then you will be navigated directly to the Sharing tab page.
  4. Click ‘Paste link’ and then ‘Save & copy’. Now the content is added under the previously created (and shared) permalink.

Opening and sharing the video by its permalink

When a permalink is opened in any browser, the url will redirect and the video the permalink points to will be played.

If you want to share the permalink of the video from here, click the Share icon in Player and select Copy link option as follows:

The video permalink will be copied if the video has one (if not, then the direct video link will be copied):
