  • This release will contain updates to all three ECDN components. To use these new capabilities, existing ECDN server instances will need to be upgraded.
  • You need to take three actions:
    • Ensure you have setup an recurring maintenance window in the ECDN portal. We will upgrade your ECDN servers at the specified time.
    • Setup an SSH-key in the ECDN portal. - We will sunset remote password based logins into ECDN servers on Thu May 2, 2019. Beyond this time you will only be able to login to the ECDN server from the hypervisor console. For any kind of remote access, you will need to setup an SSH-key in the ECDN portal.
    • You need to identify at least one member in your team to play the role of af Super Admin and alert IBM support team of this choice, so that they can assign to this person the Super Admin role. Read more about user role.
  • The changes in this release are:
  • Portal:
    • Added: User roles: Super Admin, Admin and Reader. All existing ECDN portal logins will be given Admin role provileges, which is the same as what you are able to do today. A Reader role will have read-only privileges within ECDN portal.
    • Added: User accounts: page that shows you a list of all logins created for your ECDN account. Access to this page is restricted to only those with Super Admin role.
    • Added: As a Super Admin you can add new ECDN portal login account for a new team member, or suspend access for someone who may have left your team.
    • Added: As a Super Admin you can view a list of recent logins for a given user with their timestamps and IP addresses.
    • Added: SSH-key based remote logins. All remote access to ECDN server instances will require you to first register your SSH-key in the ECDN portal. Password based remote logins will be restricted to only hypervisor console based logins after the initial transition time.
    • Added: On Server list page a new batch action to allow you to enable or disable remote access on one or more ECDN server instances in a single operation.

  • Manual control of what ECDN servers players can connect to. This is an optional feature. By default, the video player will connect to the "closest" ECDN server, which is determined dynamically. With this feature, for each location, you will have the option to specify a whitelist or blacklist of local IP subnets. When enabled, the ECDN servers will only serve video content to players in those local subnets. You will manually have to update local subnet list in the ECDN portal, as subnets are added or removed in your local network. For more details see this support article.
  • A ECDN server upgrade is required to version: 2.1 .20180806123507 to use this capability.
  • Other changes:
    • [portal] only displays a subset of long External IP lists on Edit Location page instead of the full list. A Show more link is added to be able to perceive the entire list.

  • Persist recorded videos contents in ECDN server cache to disk. Previously all cache content was in memory, and was lost after a server reboot. Existing ECDN server instances will need to be upgraded to enable them to use this new feature. Upgrade will require the ECDN servers to be rebooted. ECDN operations team will do this upgrade and reboot. This is an optional feature. Even after existing ECDN servers are upgraded with this new release, you will need to make additional changes manually on the host hypervisors to enable cache persistence to disk. You don't have to immediately do the manual steps. You may delay them as per your convenience and when you are ready to use this capability.
    • All contents in the cache disk will be encrypted .
    • Only recorded video playbacks are cached to disk on first use. Live broadcast stream contents are cached only in memory.
    • Minimum recommended size of the cache disk is 4GB.
    • Management Portal displays on the server configuration page new controls to enable or disable the use of cache disk. When disabled, recorded videos content will also be cached in the memory.

  • We have now released our own content distribution solution that is dedicated for content delivery to the ECDN server instances. It includes set of “midgress” servers in select IBM Video Streaming data centers around the world. ECDN server instances will now connect to the midgress server in their region to get the video content. This eliminates the need for enterprises to open firewall rules to allow connectivity to 3rd party CDN providers.

To see the benefits of these midgress servers, we will need to update the configuration settings on all existing ECDN server instances. In this update, the upstream server will be changed from the 3rd party CDN provider to the closest IBM midgress server.

Once you give us an update maintenance window, we will trigger a batch update on all your server instances. It will take about 30 seconds to refresh the configuration for each instance.

  • ECDN Management portal will not have any downtime.
  • There may be gaps in the performance metrics for up to 15 minutes.
